The Power of Rapport: Why It Matters for Hypnosis and How to Achieve It
What makes a good therapist? You might think it’s their knowledge, their skills, or their personality. But according to Carl Rogers, one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century, the answer is rapport.
Rapport is the feeling of connection, trust, and understanding that a therapist establishes with their client. Rogers discovered that rapport was the single most important factor in any therapy, regardless of the type or technique used. He found that when a therapist had rapport with their client, they could facilitate positive change more effectively and efficiently.
To build rapport with your subject, you can use a technique called matching and mirroring.
Matching and mirroring involves copying their body language, mannerisms, and words to create a sense of similarity and harmony. When you match and mirror your subject, you make them feel comfortable and relaxed around you, and you also communicate on an unconscious level that you are on the same wavelength as them.
Matching and mirroring can be applied to various aspects of communication, such as posture, gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, breathing, voice tone, tempo, volume, pitch, words, phrases, etc. The key is to do it subtly and naturally, without making it obvious or exaggerated.
Here are some examples of how to match and mirror your subject:
- If they lean forward, lean forward slightly as well.
- If they cross their legs, cross your legs in the same direction.
- If they smile, smile back at them.
- If they blink frequently, blink more often as well.
- If they speak slowly and softly, speak slowly and softly too.
- If they use words like “feel”, “see”, or “hear”, use the same words when talking to them.
Matching and mirroring takes advantage of the fact that people like people who are like themselves. Therefore, by sending an unconscious signal that you are similar to them, you automatically build rapport with your client.
However, there is an easier way to achieve the same result: simply pretend that your client is the most fascinating person in the whole world!
Crazy, right? But if you can get into the state of being truly interested in and fascinated by your client, your body language will automatically align with theirs, and rapport will follow naturally.

The Tacit Contract: A Simple and Effective Way to Induce Trance and Influence Behavior
The tacit contract is a powerful technique that can help you improve your skills in hypnosis and influence. It uses the principle of presupposition, which is a way of implying something without directly stating it. By using the tacit contract, you can create an unspoken agreement with your listener that will make them more likely to comply with your suggestions.
The basic structure of the tacit contract is:
“As soon as you do X, I’ll know you’re ready for Y.”
X is the action that you want your listener to do, and Y is the outcome that you want to achieve. For instance, if you want to hypnotize someone, you could say:
“As soon as you close your eyes, I’ll know you’re ready to go into trance.”
This way, you are not telling them to close their eyes or go into trance, but you are implying that they will do so. By using the word “as soon as”, you are also creating a sense of urgency and expectation. By using the phrase “I’ll know”, you are also establishing rapport and authority.
The tacit contract works because it bypasses the critical faculty of the conscious mind and communicates directly with the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind accepts presuppositions as true and acts on them accordingly. The tacit contract also removes resistance and creates cooperation by giving the listener a choice and a reason to do what you want.
You can use the tacit contract in many situations, such as hypnosis, persuasion, sales, negotiation, coaching, parenting, and more. It is a simple and effective way to get better results in interpersonal communication and hypnosis.
How to Use the Hypnotic Voice to Increase Suggestibility
By altering their vocal tone, hypnotists can create a distinct manner of speaking that greatly enhances receptiveness and suggestibility. The hypnotic voice serves multiple purposes during hypnosis. By understanding and harnessing the hypnotic voice, you can greatly enhance your ability to induce powerful hypnotic trances that change your client’s lives.
The hypnotic voice possesses unique qualities that contribute to its effectiveness. It should be gentle and soothing, aiming to induce relaxation and tranquility in the subject. By adopting a softer and deeper tone, the hypnotist establishes an atmosphere of safety and comfort. This relaxing atmosphere enhances the subject's receptiveness to suggestions.
Additionally, the hypnotic voice operates at a slower pace, allowing the subject to focus deeply and follow suggestions with ease. By slowing down their speech, the hypnotist also encourages a sense of mental and physical relaxation.
With these general guidelines, you can experiment and develop his or her own hypnotic voice. We suggest you use your best judgment on when to use the hypnotic voice. Practice makes perfect!
Be careful, though. You don’t want to sound weird. A bad hypnotic voice will break rapport and disrupt trance. But a well-honed voice greatly increases the subject’s expectation and immerses them in a deep and powerful hypnotic trance.
How to Use Linkages to Create Hypnotic Language Patterns
One of the most powerful techniques that Milton Erickson used to create hypnotic language patterns was the use of linkages. Linkages are words or phrases that connect different ideas or statements in a way that implies causality, logic, or sequence.
One of the most common and effective linkages that Erickson used was the word “and as”, which implies that two things are happening simultaneously and that one thing leads to another. For example:
And as you relax your shoulders, you may feel a wave of relaxation spreading through your body, and as you can listen to the sound of my voice and as you listen, you can let your mind drift into a pleasant state of trance, and as you imagine a positive outcome for your situation, you may allow yourself feel a sense of confidence and optimism.
The pattern “and as” is very useful for creating smooth and natural transitions between different suggestions and for inducing deeper levels of trance. By using this pattern, you can guide the listener to follow your suggestions with ease and without resistance.

How to Use the Hypnotic Hangover to Boost Your Suggestions
This is the state that your client will be in just as they come out of trance. They are still in a highly suggestible state, so use this to your advantage. Say positive things to wrap up your session and to leave them feeling optimistic and wonderful.
The hypnotic hangover is not a negative or unpleasant state. On the contrary, it is a state of enhanced awareness, relaxation, and receptivity. It is similar to the state of mind that occurs after a deep meditation or a refreshing nap. Your client may feel more alert, calm, and focused than before.
The hypnotic hangover can last for a few minutes, depending on the depth and duration of the trance. During this time, your client may be more open to your suggestions and more responsive to your feedback. This is a great opportunity to reinforce the positive changes that you have helped them achieve and to prepare them for future sessions.
For example, ending the session with “You did great and you will sleep really well tonight feeling happy and calm” will enhance your subject’s experience. You can also add some suggestions for their behavior or attitude in the following days, such as “You will notice that you are more confident and motivated in everything you do” or “You will find it easy and enjoyable to practice these techniques every day”.
By using the hypnotic hangover to your advantage, you can create a lasting impression on your client and help them achieve their goals faster and easier. Remember, hypnosis is not only what happens during the session, but also what happens after it. Make sure you use every opportunity to make your client feel good and to guide them towards success.
