Ever feel unsure about what hypnosis technique to use with a client?
We often hear newer hypnotists asking for advice on what technique to use for a client with a particular problem. They’re often searching for any infallible method or even a perfect hypnosis script that will fix whatever issue the client has.
In this short blog post, we’ll discuss:
Why there’s no such thing as a flawless method.
Hypnosis scripts and why they’re not reliable..
How to learn hypnosis based on principles easily and effortlessly.
There Is No Magic Solution
It would be a big mistake to think there is an infallible solution to any situation a client may present.
That’s the main problem with hypnosis scripts and fixed step-by-set protocols. They’re tailored to specific problems as though they were the exact same for everyone, but they aren’t. These fixed procedures will work sometimes. But most of the time, the results will be very poor or they won’t work at all.
People are different from each other, and these human variations must not be ignored.
Hypnosis Scripts Are Training Wheels
Hypnosis scripts are useful when learning hypnosis. At times, it is useful to study a script to get ideas and structures for inductions or hypnosis change work. But relying on them when working with clients is like never taking the training wheels off your bike.
Hypnosis scripts provide you with a pattern you can systematically follow. Using them means you can do hypnosis without necessarily memorizing what you're going to say. But good hypnotists don't have to memorize anything. We just know what to say and when.
Don’t become dependent on scripts, but use them to understand the principles working underneath so you can do it yourself using your own words.
Calibration - The Key for Good Hypnotherapy
In hypnosis, to calibrate means observing a person’s external behavior and physiology, and to notice the changes that are happening, and whether they’re going into trance.
But calibration is also about taking that human variation into consideration when choosing any therapeutic intervention. There is an almost infinite number of things that can be done in a hypnosis session. For each individual, a good hypnotist will pick a different approach.
This decision will be based on many factors, such as:
The answers to these questions, and other intake questions, ought to be considered before any attempt to help someone with hypnosis.
The bottom line is: good hypnotists have flexibility of behavior. They’re able to intuitively craft the best solution for the person they’re dealing with.
This comes from experience, but it’s also the result of proper training, which creates flexible hypnotists who don’t need to look for a perfect script or infallible technique.
