Hypnosis is a Psychodynamic Loop

In simpler terms, hypnosis is an interactive experience. It usually consists of a hypnotist working with a willing subject, and it’s an active process on both ends. This psychodynamic loop is marked by continuous communication, which travels back and forth between both parties.

It’s extremely important to realize that hypnosis is much more like a conversation than a thing you do to someone.

The notion that the hypnotist is the one in control and the subject just accepts his commands without question is outdated and ridiculous. It implies the subject is merely a passive element of this interaction, and that he simply receives magical suggestions that will miraculously solve whatever problem he has.

That’s why we strongly advise against the use of hypnosis scripts - at least when it comes to working with a client. Scripts can be great learning tools. But spontaneous interactions between people are not scripted. So if hypnosis is an interactive experience, like a conversation, how can you rely on a script to help anyone make changes?

You can use scripts as training wheels. You’ll find effective hypnosis principles and powerful language patterns in them, so they can be a tool for study. But in a client session, they must not be used as a replacement for doing actual hypnosis. In this situation, every word you say must be your own.

Calibration - The Key to Good Hypnotherapy

Calibration is not just important for anything related to hypnosis, it’s crucial.

The ability to calibrate is what sets mediocre hypnotists apart from the truly skilled ones. If you’re not able to tell what’s going on with the subject who is in front of you, you’re going against the very essence of hypnosis, which, as we explained, is an interactive experience.

Calibration boils down to being able to get appropriate feedback from the subject. Observe how they respond to whatever you’re doing, then adjust your instructions accordingly. This implies flexibility of behavior, something you can’t have when you’re just reading a script at someone.

To sum up. you need to be able to SEE and HEAR the hypnosis subject in order to gauge their response to see how well things are going. You’re not just talking endlessly at the person, it’s a psychodynamic loop of communication.

The Mindscaping Situation and a Better Solution

Hopefully, by now, we’ve made it clear how hypnosis involves interaction and communication. A hypnosis session where the flow of communication goes only one way is barely hypnosis at all.

We find it extremely important that all of our students understand this before attempting anything with hypnosis, which leads us to the email that motivated this post.

The reason she wanted her money back is because she did not realize that, for this technique, she would have to hear what her clients say during the online session. Her understanding of a hypnotherapy process was clearly so out of place she thought she wouldn’t have to interact with her clients at all!

We aren’t mocking or chastising her or anyone for thinking like this. Her misunderstanding is likely due to poor training and a lack of foundational knowledge in hypnosis she probably isn’t aware of. But the result is such poor quality work that it needs to be addressed.

We think that even if you’ve received poor foundational training and were taught to just read scripts at people, you deserve to improve your skills and become the great hypnotist you have the potential to be.
