If fear has you trapped, hypnosis is the key to freedom.
Panic attacks and claustrophobia often feel like they come out of nowhere. One minute you're fine, and the next, your heart is racing, your chest tightens, and a sense of sheer terror takes over. If you’ve ever experienced this, you know how overwhelming it can be.
But here’s the good news: You don’t have to live with it. Panic attacks and claustrophobia aren’t random; they’re responses triggered by your unconscious mind, often shaped by past experiences, and because they originated in your unconscious, that’s where you can find the solution.
Hypnosis provides a direct and effective way to uncover the root cause, neutralize the fear, and rewire your brain for calm and confidence. In this post, we’ll explore how hypnosis works to resolve panic attacks and claustrophobia, along with some practical tools you can use right away.
Why Do Panic Attacks and Claustrophobia Happen?
Every panic attack has a trigger, even if you don’t consciously recognize it. Your unconscious mind is constantly scanning your environment, looking for patterns—especially ones that it associates with danger.
For example, let’s say someone has their first panic attack during a dental procedure. They might think the dental work itself caused the reaction, but in reality, their unconscious mind could be linking it to an earlier experience—perhaps feeling helpless or trapped as a child. Once that connection is made, the unconscious mind starts treating similar situations as a threat, triggering panic even when there’s no real danger.
This is why people often say, “I don’t know why this is happening! I’ve never had a problem before.” The unconscious doesn’t work on logic; it works on associations. Something in the present is reminding it of something in the past, and it’s firing off the old fear response.
The key to fixing this is to get to the root cause—the very first time that feeling ever occurred—and clear it. And that’s where hypnosis comes in.
Using the Affect Bridge to Find the Root Cause
One of the best ways to resolve panic attacks is through a technique called the Affect Bridge. This process allows a person to access the original event that created the fear so they can release it once and for all.
A hypnotist will guide the person into a trance and then ask them to connect with the feeling of panic—just enough to access it, not enough to overwhelm them. Then, they’ll use wording like:
"As you connect with that feeling now, let your unconscious mind take you all the way back to the very first time you ever experienced this. Whether you consciously remember it or not, just allow your mind to bring you there now. Notice where you are. Are you inside or outside? Is it day or night? Are you alone or with someone?"
By asking these questions, the hypnotist helps the client uncover the original sensitizing event. With the right technique, once the person revisits this memory in hypnosis, the emotional charge begins to weaken. The hypnotist may have them step into the event briefly, then step out again, allowing them to process the emotions safely.
If at any point the experience becomes overwhelming, the hypnotist can immediately bring the person out of the memory and into a calm, safe state. This ensures that the process is always controlled and comfortable.
This process is commonly known as hypnotic age regression or regression to cause. To learn more about how it works and how to use it step-by-step, click here.

The ADAC Method for Rewiring the Response
Another powerful way to resolve panic attacks and claustrophobia is the ADAC method. This technique systematically replaces fear with a positive resource state, rewiring the brain’s response.
ADAC stands for:
- Activate – Bring up the problem state (feeling of panic or fear).
- Dissociate – Step outside of the experience, observing it from a distance.
- Associate – Connect to a powerful resource state (confidence, calm, strength).
- Collapse – Blend the old fear with the new resourceful feeling, neutralizing the fear response.
The reason this works is that the brain can’t hold two conflicting emotional states at the same time. By activating the fear and immediately linking it to a strong, positive resource, the old panic response loses its grip.
A variation of this, called Walking with Grace and Power, is part of our NLP Essentials course. This method uses movement to integrate the new, positive state at a deep level, making the change even more permanent.

Direct Suggestion in Hypnosis (DSiH) to Reinforce Change
Once the old fear is cleared, it’s important to reinforce the new response with Direct Suggestion in Hypnosis (DSiH). This means feeding the unconscious mind strong, positive suggestions that lock in the change.
For example, once someone has successfully neutralized their panic response, a hypnotist might say:
"From now on, whenever you find yourself in a small space, you’ll notice a deep sense of calm washing over you. Your breathing remains slow and steady, and you feel completely in control."
Even though panic and claustrophobia used to be a problem, these suggestions help reframe them as something that’s in the past—fully resolved.
Timelines: A Gentle Way to Clear the Past
Another effective approach is Timeline Therapy™, developed by Tad James. This technique allows a person to view their life as if it were laid out on a timeline—like a string stretching from the past to the present.
By mentally “floating” back along their timeline, they can find the root cause of the fear, reframe it, and let it go—all without having to relive the emotions. This makes it an excellent choice for people who want to clear old fears in a gentle, non-intrusive way. If you’re trained in this method, it can be an excellent tool for resolving past trauma and emotional blocks.

A Simple Technique to Shut Down Panic Attacks Fast
For an immediate way to shut off a panic attack, use this:
- Gently squeeze your index finger (either hand) and hold it until you feel a slight pulsation.
This simple technique often interrupts the panic response, helping you regain control quickly. While it’s not a long-term fix, it’s a great tool to have in the moment.
Panic attacks and claustrophobia don’t have to control your life. There are multiple ways to use hypnosis to release old fears and step into a calm, confident future.
