Get Better At Hypnosis With Direct Suggestion

Every hypnotist NEEDS to know direct suggestion.

That’s because direct suggestion is one of the foundational tools in hypnosis. It’s the act of giving clear, positive instructions to your client while they’re in trance.

Here’s the thing—hypnosis isn’t just about doing deep work and hoping for the best. You need to make sure those changes are reinforced in a way that ensures they last. Direct suggestion is like the glue that holds everything together. You’re giving your client’s unconscious mind the message, “This is how things are now, and this is how they’re going to stay.”

Keep reading to understand how to use direct suggestion the right way.

Cementing Change with Direct Suggestions

Imagine you’ve just helped a client who struggles with insomnia. Maybe you’ve used an NLP technique, a cognitive-behavioral protocol, or even regression work to identify and resolve the root cause. Once you’ve done the core work, you can finish the session by cementing the changes with direct suggestions.

For example:

  • “And tonight, you’ll sleep deeply and peacefully, waking up refreshed and energized.”
  • “Every night, your sleep becomes easier, deeper, and more restful.”

These suggestions are the final layer that locks in the change. By giving these suggestions, you're helping the unconscious crystallize the new reality and reinforce the positive outcomes.

Why Cementing is Crucial

Change work is powerful, but it’s even more effective when it’s reinforced with clear direction. It’s not enough to simply remove the problem—you also need to guide the client towards a positive future state. This is where direct suggestion plays a crucial role. By consistently giving the unconscious mind a clear picture of what life looks like after the session, you’re helping those changes take root.

Ego Strengthening: Building Confidence and Resilience

One of the most important things you can do for your clients—besides helping them resolve their immediate issue—is boost their self-confidence and resilience. We call this ego strengthening, and it’s a simple but essential part of any hypnosis session.

Ego strengthening suggestions are all about helping your client feel good about themselves. These are the positive affirmations that remind them they’re capable, strong, and able to handle whatever life throws at them. Even if you spend just a few seconds on this at the end of the session, it can have a profound effect.

For example, after doing change work for something like anxiety, you might say:

  • “You are a strong, capable person, moving confidently through your life.”
  • “You see opportunities and go for them with ease and courage.”
  • “You’re making progress every day, and you have all the tools you need to succeed.”

Why Ego Strengthening Matters

Ego strengthening is especially important because people often come to hypnosis feeling vulnerable or unsure. Maybe they’ve struggled with a problem for years, or maybe they feel stuck. By reinforcing their self-worth and highlighting their strengths, you’re helping them see themselves in a new light.

When a client feels stronger, more confident, and more capable, they’re more likely to maintain the changes you’ve helped them make. Ego strengthening helps ensure that the client leaves the session not just with the immediate issue resolved, but with a renewed sense of personal power. This boost of self-worth can make all the difference in how they carry forward with the changes.

Motivating Clients to Follow Through with Homework

As hypnotists, we know that the work doesn’t end when the session does. Often, clients need to continue reinforcing the changes with some kind of homework—whether it’s practicing self-hypnosis, focusing on empowering questions, or doing other kinds of exercises.

However, getting clients to actually do their homework can be a challenge. That’s why direct suggestion is such a valuable tool here. By giving them motivational suggestions at the end of the session, you’re setting them up to succeed.

For example, if you’ve given your client self-hypnosis as homework, you can say something like:

  • “You’ll find it easy and enjoyable to practice self-hypnosis every day, and each time you do, you’ll go deeper into trance, and reinforce the positive changes we’ve made.”

Why Homework is Important

When clients actively participate in their own change process, they get better results. Giving them direct suggestions about completing their homework helps motivate them to take responsibility for their continued growth. Whether it’s practicing self-hypnosis, using empowering questions, or simply staying mindful of their progress, this extra layer of suggestion keeps them on track.

The Essential Ingredients of Effective Direct Suggestion

Now that you know the primary ways to use direct suggestion, let’s look at the core ingredients that make these suggestions as effective as possible.

1. Keep It Positive

One of the most important things to remember is to always phrase your suggestions in the positive. You want to guide the client toward what they want to experience, not what they’re trying to avoid.

For example, instead of saying, “You won’t feel anxious anymore,” say, “You feel calm and confident in every situation.” Instead of saying, “You’re not going to lie awake at night,” say, “You fall asleep easily and enjoy deep, restful sleep.”

The unconscious mind responds far better to positive instructions than negative ones, so always frame your suggestions in a way that leads the client toward their desired state.

2. Use Repetition (But Don’t Overdo It)

There’s a common myth that you have to repeat suggestions dozens of times for them to work, but that’s simply not true. Repetition is important, but it’s not about quantity—it’s about quality.

We recommend repeating the core suggestion three times, phrased slightly differently each time. For example:

  • “You’ll sleep deeply and peacefully tonight.”
  • “Your mind and body will relax completely, allowing you to drift into restful sleep.”
  • “You’ll awaken feeling refreshed and energized after a full night of deep, peaceful sleep.”

Repeating the suggestion in different ways ensures that the message gets through, but it also keeps things interesting and engaging for the unconscious mind.

3. Keep It Short

Direct suggestions should be concise and to the point. Aim for around 10 words or fewer for each suggestion. The goal is to deliver a clear, targeted message, not to overwhelm the unconscious with unnecessary details.

4. Use Word Painting to Add Emotion

Word painting is one of the most powerful tools in your hypnotic arsenal. It’s about using emotion and energy in your voice to make the suggestion more compelling. Instead of delivering suggestions in a flat, monotonous tone, bring some life to them!

For example, instead of saying, “You’ll sleep well tonight,” try saying, “You’ll sleep so deeply tonight, waking up feeling refreshed, energized, and ready for the day.” When you inject emotion and energy into your words, they resonate more deeply with the unconscious, making the suggestion far more effective.

Direct suggestion is a vital part of making your hypnosis sessions truly effective. Whether you’re reinforcing the changes you’ve made, strengthening the client’s self-esteem, or motivating them to follow through with their homework, direct suggestion helps ensure that your clients walk away with lasting, positive results.

By mastering the art of direct suggestion, you’ll be able to deliver even more powerful transformations for your clients.
