It’s Up To You.
When the creators of Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), John Grinder and Richard Bandler were studying Milton H. Erickson, they found hidden commands in seemingly normal conversation.
Erickson would say something along the lines of, “And when you volunteer to close your eyes now, you can discover a wonderful sense of comfort as you fall into a trance.” His subjects would immediately close their eyes and drop into hypnosis.
It was astounding to say the least.
For a more auditory explanation of how embedded commands work, watch the Youtube video below. It's one of our very best on the topic of conversational hypnosis.
Mike remembers a time when he was working a stage show at Sheraton college in Ontario. He said something like, “When your ready you can relax completely…” and everybody on stage slumped down into their seat even deeper!
Talk about Fwwwuuuuahhhhh!!! (remember kids, it’s with 3 W’s, 4 U’s and 5 H’s!)
What is an Embedded Command?
Embedded commands work below the threshold of conscious awareness. The only real problem though is they have to be marked in a certain way.
We don’t mean marked with a pen or marker but rather with vocal shifts, gestures, or touch.
In other words, it’s the way we mark something out that creates the embedded command rather than the command itself. How we do that is with something called analog marking.
Wait, isn’t Angela Merkel the chancellor of Germany?
Yes she is! But we said analog marking.
Analog in this case is usually contrary to digital, which just means that one is the opposite of the other.
Think of digital as being either black or white, on or off, a 1 or a 0. Analog means black, white, and all of the shades of grey in between that.
Analog is kind of like a dimmer switch to turn the brightness of lights up and down and digital is a light switch that turns them only on or off.
This means analog marking is about changing something so subtly that it’s like barely moving the dimmer switch. You would be the only person who really knows if the brightness of the lights changed at all.
That’s exactly how embedded commands should be when marked out. Subtle enough that the unconscious mind is aware but the conscious mind doesn’t even notice them.
How to Use Embedded Commands
When you are ready to use an embedded command there are a couple of ways to successfully deliver it and a few key principles that will help you create them.
When you want to create an embedded command, make sure you can casually drop it into conversation. It also needs to be simple. If you attempt to analog mark a 15 syllable word or a phrase that is 20 words long, it’ll be really noticeable.
You’ll probably also sound like you suddenly had a brain aneurysm due to the shift in vocal tone. Something will be clearly off about your statement and others will undoubtedly recognize it.
When you are marking out the embedded command you can do it visually by directing their attention through gesturing. You can also use a change in vocal tone, volume, or with a different inflection.
Another great way of placing in an embedded command is by lightly touching or getting within proximity of the subject.
An example of touching could be patting someone on the shoulder as you say something like, “And there’s no need to (press down on their shoulder) begin to relax (release) too slowly…”
Another great way to embed commands is by quoting another person and pointing directly at your subject while looking them into the eyes.
When you quote somebody else, you can practically say anything! (almost anything, anyways)
If you are wanting to sell a product you might say something like, “You remind me a lot of my friend John, and he would always tell my customers (point and look at subject) you’ll really enjoy this product (stop pointing)...”
That’s right. It’s that easy!
