Is My Vocal Tone as Important as the Words I Use in Hypnosis?
This is a great question and we personally believe it deserves an up front and honest answer! So in this blog post, you are going to discover just how much of a part your vocal tone really plays in your everyday conversation and whether it matters at all while doing hypnosis!
If you enjoy the kind of high-quality content we create for this blog, you'll most definitely love our Youtube channel. Check it out down below. Thanks for SUBSCRIBING and leaving a comment!
First, we have to ask - Do you think it matters at all?
How did you hear that question in your mind? Was there any emphasis on any specific part for you? What was the inflection like at the end? Did you add any volume or pauses?
Let’s ask that question again, this time with some minor changes!
Do YOU think it matters at all?
Do you think IT MATTERS at all?
Do you think it matters AT ALL?
DO you think it matters at all?
The Hypnotic Voice - Why Vocal Tone Matters
Did you notice how depending on where you place emphasis within the sentence the meaning also seems to change? Going back to that same question of “Do you think it matters?” what would happen if emotion was added?
Notice how it changes the context or meaning behind the question.
Do you think it matters at all?
Do you think it matters at all?
Do you think it matters at all?
You are always communicating, even if you don’t think you are. Unconscious subtleties like body posture, vocal tone, and facial expressions are happening without your conscious awareness. On the outside though, other people are catching onto it.
That’s the reason why when somebody isn’t being completely honest with you, it’s easy to tell.
“Well, I guess the color of your house looks okay…”
To which, you would probably respond, “..but…?”
And then they would probably reply, “Well if I’m being honest, why in the world did you paint your house hot pink with polka dots? And then you put curtains on the outside of your windows…I mean..who does something like that?!”
At first, these details to conversation and communication may not appear to be that important, but it’s the exact opposite. And when it comes to doing hypnosis, the level of importance radically increases.
Vocal tone is an amplifier of hypnotic experience.
Take for example, the suggestibility test we teach in The Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy called the Dictionary & Ballon Test.
This simple exercise allows the hypnotist to show to themselves and also the subject that they are, in fact, hypnotisable! During this exercise, the subject closes their eyes and while holding out their hands, one palm up and the other palm down, they imagine one hand is holding a heavy book while the other has a string with a helium filled balloon tied around it’s wrist. What often happens is that the subject will notice one arm getting heavier while the other gets lighter!
We always suggest to our students to use their hypnotic voice and to intentionally speak in a way that would mimic what they want their subject to do. It’s simple yet elegantly powerful.
Remember, earlier we mentioned that vocal tone is an amplifier of hypnosis. So that means when instructing your subject during the Dictionary & Balloon test to notice just how heavy the book is, you would change your voice including volume and pitch, to match just how heavy the book feels.
With the book, make your words sound bolder, MORE PRONOUNCED…
…SO - THEY - REALLY - NOTICE - THE - WEIGHT…
…and with the balloon, your voice changes to match just how light that balloon feels.
In the same way you have control over your voice when you are wanting to be extra secretive and sneaky by whispering something into somebody's ear, you are completely capable of using your voice in other hypnotic ways! It really is that simple!
That means that the words you use are important but unless you can consciously use your voice in a way that evokes meaning behind your words, language patterns will just simply be words on a page that may or may not hypnotize your subject.
Hypnosis Tip - Why Congruence is Important
Part of what we teach in The Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy is something Mike Mandel came up with called The Mandel Triangle. Simply put, each side of the triangle represents a characteristic of all successful hypnotists. One section of the triangle is “Congruence.”
Congruence simply means that everything about the situation and context make sense. If you went to a fancy restaurant and your server was dressed up in a pirate outfit, you might start to think that maybe they are celebrating an achievement, perhaps it’s “Fun Fridays,” or maybe it’s Halloween! In your mind, you are looking for context about the situation so you can add meaning behind it.
But if your server was the only person who was dressed up as a pirate, there was no such thing as “Fun Friday” and they looked completely out of place, then the situation would appear to be very incongruent.
In the same way that silly pirate outfits at a fancy restaurant would start to send off internal bells and whistles that something just “wasn’t quite right,” your verbal and non-verbal communication do the same thing.
As a hypnotist, your job is to be a facilitator of trance. You, like most other people, use your voice as a means of achieving that result. In order for your subject to feel like they can trust you with the process, your vocal tone must match your words.
If you are insecure about whether the induction you want to do will work or if you are doubting yourself and your abilities, your subject will unconsciously begin to pick up on those subtleties.
So how do you become more congruent? For starters, becoming more aware is the first step of any type of improvement. We would suggest you start to pay attention to how you speak and the words you use.
We would also suggest you speak with intention. If you are doing an induction, then speak as though you mean it. Imagine yourself in your mind performing the induction flawlessly, using your vocal tone to enhance the experience, and being completely congruent in what you are saying, feeling, and doing. Then practice and learn from each experience until you are satisfied with the results you are getting.
There is no secret sauce to hypnosis besides practicing and learning from your mistakes.
I Want to Learn How to Be a Confidence Hypnotist
We mentioned the Mandel Triangle having “Congruence” as one of its sides, and likewise, one of the other sides is “Confidence!” You’ll become more congruent with your verbal and non-verbal language by increasing your confidence.
Gaining confidence with hypnosis happens in a variety of ways. Practicing as often as you can is one of ways you can increase your confidence, but did you know there is an even easier way to instantly increase your confidence?
One of the foundational methods we teach in The Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy is all about understanding the principles of hypnosis instead of relying on a script. We believe that scripts are good training wheels to have, but if you are a hypnotist who primarily relies on scripts, you’ve probably found them to be more like golden-handcuffs.
Telling people you're a hypnotist comes with some awesome perks. Most of the time, as our good friend Sean Michael Andrews (A.K.A the world’s fastest hypnotist) says, “If you are a hypnotist, you ARE the most interesting person in the room.” If you’ve ever been to a party or amongst friends and told them about the new skill you’ve acquired, you’ve probably had people ask you to hypnotize them right on the spot!
Unfortunately though, if you rely on scripts, that conversation probably goes from “interesting” to “not-so-much” if you tell them, “Oh well I don’t have my scripts on me so I can’t do hypnosis right now…”
That’s like telling somebody you are a vehicle mechanic but you rely solely on videos you’ve found online to show you how to fix stuff. Your credibility as the subject-matter-expert will be questioned.
The good news though, there is a better way to learn hypnosis. Inside The Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy we teach you the core principles behind WHY hypnosis works and HOW you can make it work without scripts or creating hypnosis audio tracks for your subjects.
This means you can hypnotize anybody, anywhere, at anytime, given you understand the principles well enough. This is an immediate short-cut to doing stellar hypnotic work without years and years of training.
In fact, most of our students are able to go from never hypnotizing anyone to being able to hypnotize people within their first 2 weeks of The Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy.
And best of all, we are offering you the opportunity to join us and do just that! When you claim your spot inside The Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy you’ll get your first 2-weeks for free! That’s right!
