If you’re a hypnotist, ego state work isn’t just fascinating—it’s essential.
Ego state theory is one of the most fascinating and practical areas in hypnosis and personal development. Whether you’re a hypnotist, a therapist, or just someone curious about the inner workings of the mind, understanding ego states can unlock incredible insights into human behavior and help you create profound, lasting change.
At the Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy (MMHA), we often discuss ego state theory and parts work because they’re such effective tools for transformation. Recently, one of our students asked:
Who are some of your favorite authors on ego state theory, and what books would you recommend to learn more?
That’s a great question!
Let’s take a closer look at the origins of ego state theory, the key contributors, and how you can use this knowledge to enhance your skills as a hypnotist—or simply understand yourself better.
What are Ego States?
Before diving into the resources, let’s quickly cover what ego state theory is all about. The concept is simple yet profound: we all have different "states" within us, like parts of our personality that come forward depending on the situation.
For example, you might have a confident, professional state that handles work presentations like a pro. But that same person might feel nervous and unsure in a different context—like a social gathering where they don’t know anyone. Both are part of you, yet they operate independently, with their own patterns, emotions, and even memories.
Ego state work is all about learning to communicate with these states and integrate them. By doing this, you can resolve inner conflicts, heal trauma, and unlock resources within yourself that you didn’t even know existed.
The Origins of Ego State Theory
To truly appreciate ego state theory, we need to go back to its roots. The concept was first introduced by Paul Federn, a contemporary of Sigmund Freud. Federn’s work laid the foundation for what we now understand about these inner "states" of mind.
While his writings are rooted in early psychoanalytic theory, they remain an important starting point for anyone who wants to grasp the historical development of ego state work. Think of Federn as the pioneer who got the ball rolling.

Key Contributors to Ego State Work
Over the years, many brilliant minds have built upon Federn’s ideas, making ego state theory more practical and accessible. Here are the most notable contributors:
Watkins and Watkins
John and Helen Watkins, a husband-and-wife team of psychologists, were instrumental in advancing ego state theory. They developed techniques for working with ego states in therapeutic settings, making the concept more actionable for real-world applications.
Their work is highly respected and serves as a bridge between the foundational ideas of Federn and the more modern approaches we see today.

Dr. Gordon Emerson
If you’re looking for the expert in ego state theory, look no further than Dr. Gordon Emerson. He’s widely regarded as the leading authority on the subject, and for good reason. Emerson doesn’t just understand ego states; he lives and breathes them.
One of the most exciting aspects of Emerson’s work is his reframing of ego states as resource states. Instead of viewing them as problems to solve or conflicts to overcome, he emphasizes their positive potential. Your ego states are resources that can help you succeed, grow, and heal when properly understood and integrated.
We were thrilled to host Dr. Emerson as a guest trainer in the Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy. His session was packed with practical insights and techniques that anyone can use to deepen their understanding of ego state work.

Robin Shapiro
Robin Shapiro is another name worth knowing in the world of ego state work. Her approach complements Emerson’s by providing additional tools and strategies for working with these inner parts. While her focus isn’t as singularly on ego states as Emerson’s, her contributions are incredibly valuable for anyone diving into this field.

Why Ego State Theory is Essential for Hypnotherapy
Ego state theory isn’t just an abstract concept—it’s a practical and transformative framework that integrates beautifully into hypnosis. By understanding and working with ego states, you can take your skills as a hypnotist to a whole new level.
In hypnotherapy, ego state work allows you to engage with the different parts of your clients’ personalities—their "states"—that may be holding onto fears, conflicts, or outdated patterns. These states often operate outside of conscious awareness, which is why traditional approaches may fall short. Hypnosis creates the perfect environment to access these states, communicate with them, and facilitate healing or change.
For example, a client struggling with self-doubt may have a critical state that undermines their confidence. Through ego state work in hypnosis, you can help the client recognize the purpose of this critical state (perhaps it’s trying to protect them from failure), negotiate with it, and transform it into a supportive ally.
Ego state work is also incredibly empowering. Instead of framing these parts as “problems” to fix, you can reframe them as resources—valuable aspects of the client’s personality that, when aligned, can help them achieve their goals.
And it’s not just for clients. On a personal level, understanding your own ego states can help you resolve internal conflicts, heal past wounds, and move forward with greater clarity and confidence. Hypnotherapists who practice ego state work often experience a profound shift in their own personal development, which naturally enhances their ability to guide others.
Ego state theory isn’t just a tool in your hypnotherapy toolkit—it’s a philosophy that transforms how you understand and work with the unconscious mind.
