We’ve all been there. As inexperienced hypnotists, we wondered whether our suggestions would actually work.
There are a number of factors associated with this, so we’ll cover a few in this blog post.
Creating a Deep Hypnotic Trance
In the classical model of hypnosis, a deep trance would make way for any suggestions to be accepted. We now know that’s not entirely true, but it’s still a very useful model. To have a better chance of giving suggestions that will be accepted, make sure your subject is in a deep enough hypnotic trance.
Even in hypnotherapy, we teach our students to always aim for the deepest trance possible. After a powerful hypnotic induction, you can use this deepener to get them as deep as they can go.
You may have heard other hypnotists say things like: “You can do all kinds of changes with just a light trance”. That’s true, of course. You can also do all kinds of changes with no trance at all, but what’s the fun in that?
We are hypnotists, and the reason people come to us, instead of other professionals, is because they want a profound change made with hypnosis. So it’s our job to fulfill that expectation as best we can. The people who insist we don’t need a deep trance to do our work are typically those who can’t get their clients into a deep trance.
In a deep and robust trance, called somnambulism, we have far more options. With the client’s critical faculty almost fully out of the way, we have the entire toolkit available. We can use advanced techniques such as age regression and NLP timelines to work on their deepest issues, and ensure they come out of trance to live a much better life afterwards.
Calibration - The Key to Good Hypnotherapy
We’ve talked about this before. Calibration is not just important, it’s a crucial aspect of hypnosis, especially in therapy.
As we discussed in a previous article, calibration is extremely important to know if your subject is in a deep enough hypnotic trance, and we’ve already established how important that is.
But not only that, you need to calibrate if the change work is taking effect.
To make sure you’ve done solid work with your client, you must use future pacing. By having the client imagine what life will be like after they’ve left your office, you’re effectively testing your work. You’re calibrating whether the change work has been done right.
If they imagine a bright and happy future ahead, your job is complete. If not, and the problem still lingers, then you still have work to do.
When future pacing, look for signs of congruence, and leave them with powerful suggestions to wrap up the session.

Give Suggestions That Align
By “align”, we don’t necessarily mean they should align with each other, but with the subject’s desires.
This probably seems obvious if you’re a competent hypnotist, but it needs to be said: Hypnotic suggestions have a much higher chance of working if the subject wants them.
Hypnosis isn’t mind control, and you’re dealing with a human being with desires and emotions. That means suggestions that aren’t ecological, or that the subject doesn’t feel good about, are practically bound to fail.
They’ll be rejected simply because the person doesn’t want them.
You can use their own language and metaphors to make your suggestion more appealing, but above all, always have your subjects’ best interests at heart.
Be ecological. Treat your subjects with care and respect. That’s always your Nº1 priority.
