Combining Hypnosis With Other Professions

Have you ever wondered how to use hypnosis within your existing profession?

Not only is it possible to combine hypnosis with a wide variety of other professions, but it’s also a terrific idea. You’ll get better results.

Let’s start with two simple ways to explain hypnosis. Then we’ll discuss how each explanation is helpful depending on how you’re applying hypnosis.

First, we can say that hypnosis is an amplifier of human experience. We believe this thought is better, in our opinion than thinking about hypnosis as some standalone technique. Think of it as a way to take something you already do and do it with a more significant effect.

Hypnosis is also a powerful method of communication. We say this because it gets right into the unconscious mind rather than being largely superficial.

With these two simple explanations, it’s easy to imagine how you can combine the power of hypnosis and hypnotic language with a wide variety of professions. We teach hypnosis to school teachers, doctors, salespeople, executives, yoga instructors, psychotherapists, life coaches, personal trainers, and others who don’t describe themselves as hypnotists.

Hypnosis Involves Focused Attention Directed Inwards

Hypnosis happens when someone begins to focus their attention on something and eventually drives that attention inward. When attention is focused inward, a person can vividly imagine feelings, behaviors, images, or other possibilities that didn’t seem to exist before the hypnotic trance.

Think about some professions where hypnosis might seem like a very natural fit. A therapist, medical doctor, or dentist might start by asking a client or patient to focus their attention on a specific spot. Soon afterward, the hypnosis practitioner could ask the client to drive their attention inward and offer direct suggestions or guided imagery to help achieve the desired result.

A dentist might want to help a patient relax to ease discomfort during a procedure. A doctor might use a quick technique to eliminate a needle phobia before drawing blood or giving an injection. Offering hypnosis to a patient in a formal setting like this would be entirely appropriate.

But what about the school teacher or salesperson? What about the parent or professional speaker? It would be weird to ask a person to stare at an object and close their eyes in this context.

And that’s why we have the second explanation of hypnosis. It’s an elegant method of communication. We can use hypnotic conversational language to shift a person’s focus from a problem to a solution.

Chris Thompson likes to say that we should all think of ourselves as manufacturers of human emotions. Conversational hypnosis is a way to focus a person’s attention and elicit a feeling that would be useful. Read: Conversational Hypnosis Techniques and Principles Made Easy.

A salesperson could have a client envision the pleasure of driving that brand new sports car. A parent could help a child emotionally connect with the reward of going out for ice cream after finishing a school project. A yoga instructor might use hypnosis to help their students feel even more amazing after a class, leaving them motivated to come back and continue their wellness journey.

You can combine so many excellent hypnotic language skills with other professional fields similar to those mentioned above.

Embedded commands are a fantastic way to sneak suggestions into a person’s unconscious mind. Provided you’re doing this with their ecology in mind; it’s entirely ethical. You can read more about embedded commands here.

Double binds present a person with the illusion of choice. When delivered confidently and in the presence of rapport, it increases the odds of a person choosing one of the two suggested options without any resistance. Stories can be hypnotic! We call these hypnotic metaphors, and they’re an incredible way to deliver a message to the unconscious without the other person having any idea that you’re talking about them.

Yes, sets and compliance sets are excellent methods to smoothly move a person away from potential resistance towards agreement and compliance. Doesn’t that sound like something worth learning? Read: Yes Sets and Compliance Sets for Hypnosis and Sales.
