Podcast #132 – Greatest Hypnotists of All Time

Welcome to Brain Software Podcast, Episode # 132! On this podcast we begin our first Top Ten List. Stay tuned for Mike’s top hypnotists of all time!

Here are the show notes:

Direct from the Hypnotic World Epicenter, Toronto Canada! Yes, reality is somewhat less than television…but…

Whatever happened to that old tranquility we used to know?

THESE ARE DAYS OF VICTORY!!!

And there’s just so damn much going on…Including Michael C. Anthony coming to Toronto, and Chris and Mike going back to London England to teach…all sponsored by the Shyzzjigg Corporation!

  • We’re back from Las Vegas, and it was a great triumph!
  • Chris says that Mike’s keynote was the best he’s ever seen…and it was all in hypnotic loops!
  • We’re going to put it in the Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy for those who couldn’t be at HypnoThoughts Live…
  • Shout-out to James Hazlerig and his Tri-Pendulum!
  • Another shout-out to our good friend Kevin Cole who used the Tri-Pendulum as part of his client session!
  • It’s our Top Ten List and is purely arbitrary and not definitive, so don’t complain…It’s in no particular order…
  • Michael C. Anthony is coming to teach in Toronto! Book your spot here!
  • Think Tank Words:    ARREST   EXPLODE    CONNECTION
  • Chris thinks of a jail cell and allowing things to explode with new connections. Mike says it’s death row…
  • Bad ideas lead to other bad ideas…but also to good ideas!
  • Chris currently looks like a convict…
  • We discuss the power of incremental change – Chris’ hair!
  • Chris can never let his wife listen to this…
  •  Mike invokes Dennis the Menace…
  • Back to hypnosis…Here comes the list!
  • Mesmer starts the list, which surprises Chris. It could have been Edward the Confessor! (Shout out to Richard White “Prestige!”)
  • Mesmer failed to apply Occam’s Razor…He didn’t add to the science but he contributed to the theatrics of hypnosis!
  • Yikes! Bloodletting! Get that sanguine humour out of your body…
  • Mesmer was using indirect suggestion with magnets…
  • James Esdaile is next! He was a Scottish surgeon in Calcutta…
  • Esdaile did hundreds of surgeries and the survival rate went up dramatically!
  • A 110 lbs testicular tumour due to elephantiasis! Way worse than jock itch!
  • Esdaile bombs out in London! Full details at eleven o’clock…
  • Number 3 is James Braid in Manchester England. His patient stared at a light and went into trance…
  • Braid said “hypnotism” but it was a term that Félix Etienne d’Henin de Cuvillers came up with 20 years earlier…
  • Mike and Chris still teach the best of the 19th century because it’s great stuff still!
  • Thanks to Dean Lohman for the excellent books, music and Oregon wine!
  • Let’s talk about Bernheim. He was a neurologist and awesome. He partnered with Liebeault in Nancy France…
  • Nancy school and Salpetriere hate each other and fight for 20 years!
  • Charcot was in Paris and set up an amazing centre at Salpetriere. Unfortunately he thought hypnotism was all about hysteria…
  • Charcot only worked with female patients…Hmmmm…
  • May 5th 1900 Dave Elman was born in North Dakota! Did early regression work and amazing direct hypnosis…
  • Elman trained only doctors and dentists. His stuff is still awesome!
  • Elman’s book Hypnotherapy is a classic!
  • You must establish selective thinking and bypass the critical faculty…

Commercial Break: The Lawn Tree Blooms

  • Again: This is Mike’s list. It doesn’t have to be yours!
  • Gil Boyne was a phenomenal direct hypnotist! He combined Gestalt Therapy with hypnotism…
  • Lecron was the father of ideomotor signals and worked extensively with Dr David Cheek…
  • Bandler and Grinder are next. They created NLP and modelled the work of Erickson, Satir and Perls…
  • They made Ericksonian hypnosis approachable for the average hypnotist…
  • Milton H. Erickson is Mike’s hero! Mike own’s a brick from his house! Thanks to David Fairweather!!!
  • Erickson started as directive and was the creator of indirect and conversational hypnosis. He was a psychoanalyst…
  • “Elman went right for the hypnotic bag!” – Mike Mandel
  • Erickson gave us metaphor work, embedded loops, ordeals, embedded commands, etc.
  • Michael C. Anthony (in Mike Mandel’s opinion) might well be the best stage hypnotist of all time! It’s all about presentation and selling what you’re doing…He’s coming to Toronto!
