Are You Living in Reality… or Your Map?

Are we creating reality on the fly?

I've been hearing this for years now. "Your thoughts create reality." It's become almost an article of faith in some self-help circles. People talk about manifesting what they want, sending positive energy into the universe, and attracting whatever they focus on.

I think they're mixing up two very different things.

Our thoughts don't create physical reality. They create our experience of physical reality. That's a huge distinction, and one that's worth understanding.

The universe has rules. Gravity is one of them. If I become convinced I can fly and step off Toronto’s CN Tower, I'll discover that my beliefs are no match for physics. Likewise, no matter how positive we become, and no matter how strong our intention for perfect health, the death rate remains one per person.

If thoughts really changed physical reality, the Toronto Maple Leafs would have won the Stanley Cup several times in the last half century.

Reality doesn't negotiate with our opinions.

What our thoughts do change is the way we experience what's happening around us.

Suppose you believe that people are basically dishonest. You'll begin noticing every broken promise, every exaggeration, every betrayal. At the same time, you'll overlook hundreds of examples of honesty and kindness because they don't fit your unconscious model of the world.

Or suppose you buy a red Honda Civic. Suddenly they're everywhere. You didn't create thousands of new red Hondas overnight. They were always there. Your brain simply decided they were now relevant and began bringing them into your awareness.

The same thing happens with opportunity.

One person walks into a room full of strangers and thinks, "This is exciting. I wonder who I'll meet." Another walks into the same room and thinks, "Nobody here is going to like me."

Same room.

Same people.

Completely different experience.

What changed wasn't reality. It was the filter through which reality was being interpreted.

Over the years we accumulate thousands of beliefs, assumptions, expectations and memories. Together they form an internal map of the world. We don't respond directly to reality. We respond to that map. Robert Anton Wilson called these "reality tunnels," and I think that's an excellent description.

The map is never the territory.

Unfortunately, most people don't realize they're living inside a map. They assume they're seeing reality exactly as it is, when in fact they're seeing reality through years of unconscious conditioning.

A while ago I was talking to someone who was convinced that every possible reality already exists. Every decision we make, they said, simply shifts us into another universe where that outcome has already happened.

I asked, "So every possible universe exists?"

"Every single one," they replied.

"No exceptions?"

"None."

I said, "Then there must also be a universe where there's only one universe, and that's the one we're in."

Silence.

I enjoy thought experiments like that because they remind us that an interesting idea isn't necessarily a true one. Speculation can be fascinating, but it isn't evidence.

The good news is that we don't need parallel universes or mystical energy fields to explain profound personal change.

We already know how it happens.

Your unconscious mind is constantly interpreting experience, deleting information, generalizing from past events, and assigning meaning. It isn't a video camera recording reality objectively. It's building a workable model that helps you navigate the world.

Sometimes that model is remarkably accurate.

Sometimes it's hopelessly out of date.

Someone who was humiliated speaking in public at the age of twelve may still feel anxious giving a presentation at fifty, even though the circumstances have completely changed. The old map is still running the show.

That's where hypnosis comes in.

Good hypnosis isn't about changing the external world. It isn't about manifesting parking spaces or influencing the weather with your thoughts.

It's about updating the map.

When the unconscious mind lets go of limiting beliefs, old fears, and inaccurate assumptions, your experience changes dramatically. You notice opportunities that were always there. You become calmer because your nervous system no longer interprets everything as a threat. You communicate differently. You make better decisions. Other people respond to you differently because you're responding differently to them.

The world may not have changed at all.

You have.

And once you change, your experience of reality changes with you.

That's why hypnosis is so powerful.

It doesn't ask you to suspend the laws of physics.

It helps you stop being limited by the outdated laws you've unconsciously written for yourself.
