A First Hand Experience of Being Hypnotized by Dr. Mike Mandel
By Chris | January 6, 2009
I just became aware of this awesome blog post about being hypnotized by Dr. Mike Mandel. The post is by Chris Lahay from Peterborough, Ontario. He attended a stage hypnosis show in December 2008. Mike did his human lie detector on Chris, and then Chris went up on stage for the hypnosis portion of the show.
His post is probably the best written account I’ve ever seen by someone who was hypnotized as part of a stage show. Keep in mind that stage hypnosis is purely for comedy, and has very little in common with hypnotherapy (for therapy).
Mike did a variation of the human lie detector on me once. He handed me a deck of cards and got me to pick the card, and memorize it. He never touched the deck of cards other than handing it to me (and the deck was in the box). To make a long story short, all Mike did was tell me a little story (60 seconds). The story included all of the words from one to ten, along with the words Jack, Queen, King and Ace … he also managed to work in the words of all suits. He observed me while he told his story. Then he told me exactly what card I had selected. It was incredible. He had no way to influence my choice since I picked a card from a regular deck at random and he never touched the cards.
Regarding Mike’s hypnosis CDs, Chris Lahay has the following to say (see the end of his blog post):
“Check out his cds… I listened to his “Stress Relief & Self Hypnosis” cd this afternoon and it is amazing!”
Chris … thanks so much for your post. I couldn’t agree more. The CDs are outstanding. Once you’ve had a taste of hypnosis you’ll easily get hooked and want to learn more.

Wonderful Testimonial for Mike Mandel’s Self Hypnosis CDs
By Chris | November 21, 2008
Here is an email that was sent in by a recent customer, Steve from Ottawa. He gave us permission to use it on this website. Thanks a ton for sending this in, Steve. If you are a fan of Mike’s self hypnosis CDs, please email me. I woudl love to get your comments.
Hi Dr. Mandel,
Just a quick note to say how much I enjoy your CD’s. I have all three and listen to them almost every night before going to sleep. If I have a presentation to do, or something stressful to deal with, I often take a break and put a CD in. For me, these CD’s act like quick break, a reset, and serve almost like a meditation program. I’m curious if you have any plans to introduce any new CD’s in the future. If so, I’d be the first in line to buy them. Thanks
Steve Lawson

Mike Mandel Article on Forensic Hypnosis (Really Interesting Stuff)
By Chris | November 21, 2008
Mike emailed me an outstanding article that he wrote for a UK journal called ReSource Magazine. The topic of the article is forensic hypnosis, which is something Dr. Mandel has been doing for a long time. This involves helping the police fight crime by helping victims to safely recall the “forgotten” memories of traumatic crimes. Mike outlines real stories and describes why he came up with a new (and safer) way to perform forensic hypnosis.
Unfortunately I only have a scanned copy, so you can click on each picture to get a larger view. The article is 3 pages long.

Covert Hypnosis
By Chris | September 9, 2008
Here is a link to a good covert hypnosis blog. I thought this would be of interest to people who look at MikeMandelHypnosis.com simply because many of you have seen Dr. Mandel’s stage hypnosis shows, and if you signed up to the email list (look to the right side of this page), then you got an email at one point describing how covert hypnosis, or conversational hypnosis, is used by Dr. Mandel during the first part of his hypnosis shows. A great stage hypnotist like Mandel HAS to be a master of covert hypnosis (which he is).
So if you check out this covert hypnosis blog, you’ll see quite a few basic concepts about hypnotic communication discussed.

By Chris | September 9, 2008
Hi folks,
Many of our readers are in the Toronto area, or close to Toronto. For those of you in the area, you have a wonderful chance to study Ericksonian Hypnosis with Dr. Mike Mandel starting in late October.
NLP Canada Training is hosting a course in Ericksonian Hypnosis, taught by Dr. Mandel. It takes place over two consecutive weekends as follows: All day on Saturday/Sunday October 25th/26th. Then Friday Evening October 31st, and All day Saturday/Sunday November 1st/2nd.
This course is not cheap, but I’ve learned more by taking this course than all of the books that I’ve read combined.
Another student of Mike Mandel is Nancy Hunter of Innovative Hypnotherapy. Nancy speaks highly of this course. She sent me the following testimonial:
If you want to learn hypnosis or improve your skills, this is the only course you need. Mike makes it fun, entertaining and jam-packed with information, techniques, and principles, conscious and unconscious learning as well as hands on practice in both classic and Ericksonian hypnosis, that will get you started or take you to the next level. It’s the best.

Hypnosis to Swim the Entire Length of the Amazon River
By Chris | July 3, 2008
Here is a link to a fantastic blog posting about a Slovenian swimmer, Martin Strel, who is the first man ever to swim the entire length of the Amazon river … all 3274 miles in 66 days. That’s 50 miles per day, folks. For Canadian readers, it’s over 80 km of swimming per day in some of the deadliest waters on earth.
How did he do it? Read the entire entry over at Tim Ferriss’ blog. What I found interesting, and the reason I’m posting this, is that Strel talked about using hypnosis to overcome the mental challenge of the task. In short, he says that there are plenty of swimmers who are more physically up to the task than he is, but the mental game is where people break down.
Quoting strel:
While I am swimming long distances I am rolling very interesting different films and stories in my head in order to forget about swimming and pains that I have in my body. Basically I am like a robot and if someone suddenly “wakes me up,” I usually get angry, because I fall out of my concentration. This “robot stage” is an ability of high-level concentration, which works like hypnosis. So I could say that if you want to forget your pains and action you have to know how to put yourself into hypnotism.
This hypnotized stage could last up to one hour on my swims and I can repeat several times a day. I needed many years to train/teach myself how to do it. I could not do this when I was younger.
Check out the original blog posting. Then consider learning self hypnosis. You might not end up swimming the Amazon, but I’m pretty sure you’ll improve your life with this skill.

Hypnosis for Anxiety
By Chris | June 23, 2008
Hello again,
First, a very quick and gentle reminder that if you send email to info@mikemandelhypnosis.com it does not go to Dr. Mike Mandel. Check the contact page again and you’ll notice his email is also specifically listed, and you should contact him directly for any inquiries into stage hypnosis or keynotes.
Now, I’m writing this post because I got an email tonight from a woman inquiring about the use of hypnosis for anxiety. Her son suffers from anxiety and she loves him enough to look for a solution, which i really admire. I know I’d go to the end of the world to help my two kids.
The question basically asked, “Can hypnosis help with anxiety”.
My answer is as follows: Hypnosis CAN help enormously, and often even eliminate anxiety. Hypnosis itself is simply a trance state. But what really matters is what the hypnotist does to help guide the patient WITHIN that trance state to solve his or her problem unconsciously. If you use self-hypnosis, then your own unconscious mind can actually play the role of hypnotist to help you solve your own problems. This is the ultimate accomplishment for a lot of people because they realize they can trust their unconscious to do the right thing.
Imagine that you suffer from anxiety and somebody tells you, “that’s silly, just ignore it … you are stronger than that” … will that help? Of course not. It will frustrate you like crazy perhaps even causing more anxiety. That is because you cannot usually solve an UNCONSCIOUS problem with a CONSCIOUS solution.
Anxiety, like many other problems, is an unconscious process. Something happens (a trigger) and you unconsciously respond by feeling anxious. The trigger was probably created by a specific event in your past that caused some sort of emotional trauma. Any time that trigger is re-played, the trauma and anxiety returns.
The solution also has to be unconscious. Hypnosis accomplishes unconscious change! That is why it works so well for so may people. One solution that a hypnotist might use is to put you into a deep trance and make you aware of resources that you have from your past, which would be useful to you in whatever situation you face that currently causes you anxiety. The hypnotist could then have you “install” this resource as an automatic response anytime you face this situation in the future. Then, before bringing you out of trance, the hypnotist might have you imagine the situation happening sometime in the future, and imagining how effectively you can now be with these resources fully available to you.
As a point of clarification, dealing with anxiety is different from dealing with phobia. A phobia is a “digital” response. Sort of black or white. Either you have the phobia or you do not. Anxiety has various levels of severity, and is not “cured” using simple techniques such as the NLP fast phobia cure. Hypnosis is very effective for anxiety or phobias, but the treatment would vary.
If you suffer from anxiety or know someone who does, then I think it makes a lot of sense to check out NLP and hypnosis tools. Mike’s CDs do teach NLP (the Peak Performance CD) and I would also say that the Stress Relief CD also has benefits to offer (particularly the lesson in self hypnosis, that can be applied to the anxiety).
If you are dead-set against the CDs for some reason, check out the sidebar for information on learning hypnosis. There are great book recommendations there.
Whatever you do, keep working on a solution. In my view, it’s better than what the medical industry will do to you with various prescriptions.
Live healthy.
